Nursery Operations Manager – Retail Sales
The Nursery Operations Manager oversees daily operations of the nursery and garden center, ensuring efficient workflow, high-quality plant care, exceptional customer service, and smooth coordination between retail and landscaping. This role is responsible for leading staff, managing inventory, maintaining facilities, and supporting sales goals while upholding company standards. You must have strong organizational skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Operations & Management
- Oversee all day-to-day nursery operations, including opening/closing procedures and scheduling, along with refining and expanding our retail offerings, bringing creative ideas to life in partnership with our leadership team.
- Train, supervise, and support nursery staff to ensure productivity and excellent customer service.
- Develop and implement processes to improve workflow, efficiency, and safety.
Plant Care & Inventory
- Ensure proper maintenance, health, and presentation of all plant materials.
- Assist with plant ordering, receiving, and inventory control to maintain optimal stock levels.
- Monitor plant quality and address issues such as pest, disease, or supply shortages.
- Organize and maintain nursery layout for cleanliness, accessibility, and visual appeal.
Customer Service & Sales Support
- Assist customers with plant selection, product questions, and gardening advice.
- Support retail sales through knowledgeable recommendations and problem solving.
- Work with a sales team to prepare for seasonal promotions, displays, and events.
Logistics & Coordination
- Oversee deliveries, loading/unloading, and proper storage of materials.
- Maintain accurate records for inventory, purchasing, and equipment use.
- Coordinate with landscape crews regarding plant pulls, job prep, and scheduling.
Qualifications
- Experience in nursery, greenhouse, garden center, or horticulture operations required.
- Strong leadership and communications skills.
- Knowledge of plant care, plant identification, pests and diseases.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced seasonal work environment.
- Physically able to lift 50+ lbs and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Proficiency with inventory systems, scheduling, and basic computer tasks.
Preferred Skills
- Horticulture degree or equivalent experience.
- Experience managing retail or landscape-related teams.
- Forklift or equipment operation experience.
- Knowledge of ordering practices and vendor relations.
