Details and Exclusions

Acts of nature (lack of rainfall, animal damage, insects, wind, hail, flooding, ice, snow, etc.) and acts of vandalism are beyond the limits of our control and therefore not covered under this warranty.

Passiglia Nursery cannot control watering once the plant leaves the nursery; therefore, death or damage caused by overwatering or lack of watering is not covered under this warranty.

It is the purchaser's responsibility to adequately water. Passiglia will not replace plants experiencing "seasonal die-back" when pruning and proper care will restore them to health. Plants left in containers or planters above ground are not covered under the warranty.

Plants not covered under this warranty: sod, annuals, tropicals, perennials, grasses, vines, groundcover, and roses.

Passiglia management will diagnose and assess the cause of damage, and their determination is final.

General Watering Instructions

Watering is one of the hardest things to teach!

In St. Louis and the surrounding area, established plants need on average 1 to 1½ inches of rain every 7 to 10 days to sustain healthy growth. This gives our area of Missouri an average of 40-50 inches of rain per year.

To keep the water from running off, slowly soaking the root area of trees and shrubs is the best way to water plants.

Defining "exact" amounts of water you should apply to your plants is very difficult. Every landscape is different; soil and conditions can change from area to area and even spot to spot in one landscape.

Here is a guide to help determine how much water to apply. Keep in mind, some areas may need more or less water depending on how fast the soil drains.

All plants should be watered immediately after planting!
Water needs to fully saturate the root ball, which may require soaking the plant twice.

Trees

Approximately 5 gallons of water for every 1-inch trunk diameter.
(A 3-inch diameter tree = 15 gallons of water.)

Shrubs

Approximately 3 gallons of water for every 1-foot of height and width of the plant.
(A 2-foot-tall by 2-foot-wide shrub = 6 gallons of water.)

Initial Watering Schedule

  • Week 1 - every other day.
  • Week 2 - every 4th day and continue through the first year.
  • Re-evaluate during periods of drought and wet weather.

After Week 2, adjust the watering according to how your soil drains and the amount of rain received. Pay attention to foliage color and texture to preemptively diagnose water, soil, and insect issues.

Annuals Perennials Herbs and Vegetables

These plants are typically planted closer to the surface where the soil heats and dries faster, causing root balls and crowns to dry out faster. Extra attention is needed until they are fully rooted in the landscape. Daily checking of the soil's moisture level for the first 2 weeks is critical. Once it has been determined how long your soil holds moisture, it dictates how often you need to water the garden.

When watering, fully saturate the area to the depth of the root zone.

During excessive heat and/or drought conditions, irrigation systems may not be able to supply enough water to saturate deeply throughout the root zone. New plantings will need additional water.

Winter Watering

Winter watering is essential during a dry winter for plants not yet established in the landscape. Plants need water even when the ground is frozen. This protects roots, crowns, limbs, and evergreen foliage from "freeze-drying." Watering 2 times per month is typically all that is needed once plants have gone dormant and there has been no rain or snow. When using a hose in the winter, remember to disconnect it from the spigot after watering to prevent freeze damage.
